I firmly believe we all have the power to make significant changes to the paths our lives take, but sometimes we have to see it to believe it. So I’m dedicating this update to showing that people just like you and me have the power to make real changes to our lives and that we don’t all have to follow the “normal” rules for constructing them.
Today we hear a lot about the “location independent” lifestyle. As you probably know, that means you work, but you can do your work from anywhere: home, an office, a cafe, or, in that dream everyone seems to have, from next to a pool or the seaside.
That all sounds well and good, but what does that REALLY look like? How do these people pay their bills? Do they have insurance? Who are their clients?
WHAT DO THESE UNICORNS ACTUALLY DO?
Well thankfully one of these mysterious beings has lifted that veil of secrecy and shares her lifestyle transparently. Gigi Griffis is a true nomad with no fixed home, but you might be surprised to find she travels with a partner, her dog, and does all the normal-people things like going to the vet and grocery shopping. She also shares her monthly budget expenses and information about just how her income breaks down by month and by income type.
This link will take you to her 2017 roundup with a LOAD of details. Also, you can check out her other blog posts for monthly posts of expenses and income.
As for how she views her life plan, I love this quote:
The story of Northwest Sourdough is truly one of rags to riches. Teresa Greenway was struggling financially and recovering from a difficult personal situation and significant family responsibilities, but with a some research and preparation was able to go from food stamps to more than $80,000 per year in income by teaching people to bake sourdough bread online. Yep, you read that right. Check out her website to see the business she has built herself.
I found Teresa’s story on Chris Guillebeau’s Side Hustle School podcast. What I like best about this podcast is that in only 15 minutes each day it tells the stories of people who have found ways to make meaningful changes to their working lives. But the diversity of these side hustles is amazing. Some are big ideas, others are passion projects, and some are simply practical solutions to a problem. Some bring in big money, others just a bit (the focus here is on side hustles that bring in money as opposed to those that are hobbies). Side Hustle School has so far told the story of more than 200 people and their hustles. Take a look, you’ll be amazed by the diversity of the hustles people dream up!
As for me, so far I’ve been an art student, pharmaceutical supply chain manager, and coach, and I’ve restructured departments, done legal business development, led Forbes-listed art workshops in Turkey, led creativity workshops in Greek high schools, created and delivered writing workshops for professionals, created and led supply chain workshops for professionals in Turkey and edited tax, legal, and audit documents. I also picked up my life and my dog and moved from New York to Istanbul Turkey.
So when someone tells me it’s not possible to climb out of a rut or change course, I smile, thank them for their advice, and go do it anyway.
If you’re feeling stuck and fearful about following your secret dreams, I’m here to tell you: it really is possible to make big changes in your life.
